Why Good Composers Aren't Working
And What To Do About It
You've built your life around your dream of scoring film, TV, or video games, and yet despite years of working your tail off, you're feeling stuck. Not working enough. Not progressing. And starting to wonder if there's something wrong with you.
Sound familiar?
If so - I'm going to be real with you for a second.
Scoring films is hard. Mastering music production is hard. Being a professional artist is hard. Navigating the film industry is hard. Building a business is hard. Anyone that tells you they can make a composer out of you in 48 hours, or give you a career in a week, is lying to you, or deluded.
And because it's so hard to put all of these pieces together, a lot of great composers are struggling to find work and make ends meet.
I know what it's like to struggle. I've been there.
When I first got the idea 15 years ago that I'd like to score films for a living, I thought it would be relatively easy to transition from being a classically-trained gigging musician. But I was not prepared for how complicated and nuanced the film industry was.
And the cold reality soon hit, that a film composer needs films to work on - plenty of them, with good budgets - or this dream is nothing more than an expensive hobby.
I knew on some level that I needed to figure out how to navigate the industry, but I had no idea how to go about it!
And let me tell you - I made every mistake in the book.
I focused entirely on trying to write music the way I wanted to, and I resisted following industry conventions. This allowed me to overlook huge gaps in my music production skillset.
At the same time - and I'm certain this is related - I was carrying all kinds of mental blocks that caused me to self-sabotage. On a deep level, I was terrified of success and didn't believe in my own intrinsic value, and unconsciously resisted doing the steps that I knew would work.
As a result I was too scared to get out of my shell and go to film industry events and meet filmmakers. I felt like an outsider.
This led me to engage in the "thoughts and prayers" method of building a business - I thought about it a lot without taking any action, and prayed that work would fall from the sky!
In the end, I moved past my fears and learned how to build relationships and build a successful business around my music - but it took me forever.
I owe a lot to the TV composer that I worked for in Hollywood for 5 years as an assistant. Without his guidance and mentorship, I would have been going in circles, spinning my wheels indefinitely.
Sometimes we just need a roadmap and a plan!
The biggest lesson I learned is that a Pro Composer must embrace both an artist mindset, and a business mindset, simultaneously - and make a commitment to seriously level-up in both areas.
Because ultimately we are hired for our artistry and storytelling ability - but without systems of business and marketing, the opportunity to be hired never materializes.
And the vast majority of composers out there focus entirely on writing great music, and ignore or resist developing business skills and systems.
It's only natural to do this - learning new skills is hard, and uncomfortable. Of course we're going to gravitate to the familiar and the comfortable.
But something's gotta give.
What good does it do you to have the ability to write amazing music, but have no films to work on?
How much longer can you sustain this?
More importantly - who are you to keep holding back your gifts from the rest of the world, when you KNOW you're capable of doing great things, and all that stands between you and a successful career is a few months of learning and hard work?
If you had a roadmap, a tested method, of what you needed to learn and put into practice in order to finally achieve your full potential -
Wouldn't you owe it to yourself to try it?
YOUR DREAM - MY MISSION
I (Robbie Teehan) founded The Pro Composer in 2020, combining my industry knowledge as a professional composer with my lifelong interests in both digital marketing and personal transformation.
In building this business and community, I noticed that a vast majority of composers were frustrated with their lack of career progress, and confused over what to do about it.
My mission is simple: to demystify the scoring industry and help as many composers as possible achieve their dreams.
OUR CLIENTS ARE WORKING AND THRIVING
I have worked personally with over 100 composers around the world and guided them to life-changing career breakthroughs.
My coaching program is tried, proven, and successful, covering every step of your industry journey, from the development of your personal artistry, to the elevation and commercial viability of your music, and finally through the building and leveraging of practical marketing assets and business systems.
It is the missing piece that connects a talented composer with high-quality scoring work. The holistic industry roadmap and vehicle that they don't teach in music school. There is no program like this anywhere in the world.
And for the first time ever...
I decided to make this program available in a "LITE" version that would be accessible to all. Normally my coaching programs cost several thousand dollars, but now, you can get the full 9-module video curriculum, and access three Zoom calls with me per week for three months, for just $497, in a special 50% launch discount.
If you're hungry and self-motivated, this "Breakthrough Lite" program will give you everything you need to completely transform your career. And I'll be available to answer all your questions and provide feedback three times per week on our group Zoom calls.
Note: You'll be able to access all the video lessons in the curriculum, and group coaching calls with me, which happen three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). However, 1-on-1 coaching with me is reserved for my private clients who enrolled in the full program. This is how I'm able to offer this program at such a massive discount.
This program is designed for professional composers who are already writing broadcast-quality cinematic music, e.g. have graduated from a Master's degree program or have similar training, and have experience writing to picture.
I recommend setting aside at least 3 months to go through all the lessons and implement them, and planning on working at least 1 hour per day.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
THIS PROGRAM IS NOT INTENDED FOR SYNC OR LIBRARY COMPOSERS, SONGWRITERS, ARTISTS, OR RECORD PRODUCERS.
IF YOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS GETTING YOUR EXISTING MUSIC PLACED IN FILMS, THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT PROGRAM FOR YOU.
This program is designed to help you get hired by film, TV, or video game creators (directors, producers, show runners, game developers, etc.) to create custom instrumental score for media. Sync Licensing is a separate business pathway from scoring, and while we cover it briefly, it's not the main focus.
And it is not intended for beginners: in order to reap the rewards of these methods, you need to be producing broadcast-quality music from your home studio, and be already working in the scoring industry, or professionally-trained and ready to start your career (e.g. hold a Master's degree in Media Scoring, or equivalent training).
IN OTHER WORDS: IF YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL AND HIGHLY-MOTIVATED MEDIA COMPOSER WHO WANTS MORE SCORING WORK, YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE.
